***The following is a detailed recap of episode 402 of FROM, “Fray,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

Kenny (Ricky He) wakes up in the clinic and looks for Sophia (Julia Doyle). He sees the door open and hears her crying. He goes after her, yelling at her to go back inside as she continues to cry. Then they see the monsters come out and he rushes her back inside and shuts the door. He yells at her, but she cries telling him her “father” is dead. He hugs her and apologizes to her. Marielle (Kaelen Ohm) comes out and asks what happened, and she says that her father is gone; she doesn’t know what happened. Kenny tells her they are going to take care of her.

At Colony House, Boyd (Harold Perrineau) talks to Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons), telling him that what he is about to say is not for him but for everyone. If people find out what happened, what Elgin did, what they did, that that’s the kind of thing that could tear the town apart which he isn’t going to let happen. Boyd tells him if anyone asks, and they will, to tell them he lost his eye helping Fatima. Elgin questions what will happen if he doesn’t, and Boyd says he will tell everyone that he killed Tillie (Deborah Grover) and put him in the box. Elgin tells him that they will find out, one way or another, as the truth always comes out. Boyd says if he was him, he would make sure it doesn’t.

The jukebox comes on playing “Good Morning Good Morning” by the Beetles as Acosta (Samantha Brown) wakes up from the booth. Julie (Hanna Cheramy) and Ethan (Simon Webster) are sleeping on the couch, and Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) wakes up from the chair. Boyd rinses his face at the mirror then comes downstairs and onto porch of Colony House. He gets binoculars and looks out, seeing a bloody bag hanging from the motel sign.

Boyd comes running down to the sign and sees it dripping blood. Acosta, Jade (David Alpay) and others watch. Tabitha sees it from her window and rushes out, worried it’s Jim. Ethan comes running out of the house, and his mother pushes him back inside as he gets upset and asks what’s in the bag. Julie, hearing the commotion, then comes downstairs as Ethan runs back out, and she goes after him. Boyd stops him in the road. Boyd tells them everything is okay. Tabitha tells Ethan he’s going to go to the barn with his sister and asks Julie to be brave and take him.

Tabitha tells Boyd to get it down. Jade helps. Meanwhile, Ethan questions Julie that it’s not their father and that they will find him. She tries to be positive.

They lower the bag. Tabitha stops Boyd from opening it, wanting to do it herself. It’s a male goat (not Alma).

Julie and Ethan open the barn and Julie screams. They all run over. Boyd grabs them as Tabitha looks in the barn. A slashed-up Jim (Eion Bailey) is hanging upside down, posed, like in Tabitha’s dream. On the wall painted in white is the Man in Yellow’s words, “knowledge comes at a cost”. Boyd holds Tabitha as she screams.

Sophia prays at her father’s bedside, crying as Kenny watches. She thanks him, and he covers the body as she asks what happens now. He says he’ll talk to Boyd about the burial. He tells her if she wants, he could take her to town show her around and maybe get her spare glasses.

Ethan, throwing and breaking stuff, is yelling at his mother, asking what she did and blaming her for his father not coming home, because they always fight. He says he wants his father and that he hates it there and hates her. She tells him they didn't fight as he runs out. Julie says it doesn’t matter and goes after him, leaving Tabitha crying.

Boyd and Jade take Jim’s body down as Donna (Elizabeth Saunders) watches. They put him in the wheelbarrow and cover him. Donna says she will go check on Tabitha and the kids. People from the town are standing around watching as they exit the barn. Ellis (Corteon Moore) comes over, and Boyd tells him they will need some help, and he goes with them. They walk to the church and bring the body in. Ellis says they need to clean him up before the Matthews see him. Boyd repeats that knowledge comes at a cost and asks what it means. Jade says they need to talk.

Kenny and Sophia come up to Sara (Avery Konrad) on the street. She tells them that they found Jim in the barn. Kenny tells Sophia to head up to the clinic. Sara asks if they were going to the storage room and says she can take her. She introduces herself and tells her she used to work at the diner and knows where all the good stuff is. Sara tells Kenny she knows they were close and she’s sorry.

Boyd and Ellis are looking at Jade’s drawings and timeline chart. Jade explains that the seven kids kept saying “anghkooey”. He says that when he played the song at the tree it was like something unlocked, and he finally understood it means remember, and they did. They wrote the sign because of the knowledge they gained and killed Jim because of them. Boyd says that if they push too hard something will push back, something Sara said in the woods. Her brother had a theory about the place and didn’t think looking for answers was a good idea. Boyd asks what they do now, assuming he’s right, how they save something that is already dead. Jade says he is working on it, and Boyd tells him to work harder.

Sara goes into the diner and walks over to Acosta and asks if she is ok. Acosta says they aren’t friends and not to talk to her like they are. Sara takes Sophia to the storage room to get clothes.

Julie sits on the bed with Ethan. Thinking he’s asleep, she takes off, and he then opens his eyes.

Donna is cleaning up the puzzle. Julie asks where her mother is and Donna tells her she had to step out. Julie says she’s going for a walk. Donna wants someone to go with her, but Julie says it’s the middle of the day, and she’ll be fine and that Ethan is asleep. Donna tells her if she needs anything to ask.

Randall (A.J. Simmons) is doing pull-ups when Julie approaches him. Not knowing what happened, he is rude at first but then realizes something is wrong and asks what happened. She tells him about her dad, and he tells her he’s sorry. She doesn’t want that, she just wants his help. He agrees. She tells him she wants him to come back to the ruins with her. She says she’s going to save her father.

Upset, Tabitha tries to scrub off the paint in the barn. Jade comes in. She yells at him to get out. He tells her it means the memories and everything the children showed them are real. She tells him she doesn’t care. Jade says he can’t imagine what she’s going through and knows she doesn’t want to hear it, but he thinks they are doing it to stop them from digging further and to try make them afraid. She tells him it worked, because she’s terrified. Her husband is dead. He tells her she has to think about her children now. She screams at him that he doesn’t care about anyone but himself, which he says isn’t true. She tells him that it should have been him hanging from the rafters.

Accosta comes out of the diner and sneaks into the ambulance. Marielle and Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) try to stop her, and Kristi jumps inside when she won’t listen, saying she's going with her while Marielle yells after them, worried for Kristi.

Boyd comes into the station and Kenny tells him he heard about Jim and questions they left them a message this time as that’s new. Boyd tells him Jade has a theory about that and there might be something to this one. Marielle comes in yelling that Kristi is in trouble as Acosta took the ambulance with Kristi inside.

Sophie, with Sara, tries on glasses in the storage room. Sophia says that it is so sad all the things left behind by people, but it’s kind of nice there’s a part of them still there that’s not forgotten. Sara says she never thought of it that way. Sophia sees a ballerina and touches it. She asks what happened to Jim and questions if that sort of thing happens a lot. Sara tells her it never used to since Boyd found the talismans, but it happens more often now. She apologizes for saying that, but Sophia says her father always said it’s important be honest about things. She asks Sara if she has a family there, and she says she doesn’t anymore. Sara says she must be hungry and they can go get some food.

Donna comes out and sees the ambulance. Kenny, Boyd, and Marielle try to wave it down. Ethan meanwhile sneaks out the back of the house with his backpack while they aren’t paying attention.

Acosta says that everyone says there is no way out, but she never got to test that herself yet; she took everyone at their word. Kristi asks if this is about Elgin and tries to explain, but she doesn’t want to hear it. Acosta says that she is a doctor and is supposed to help people and questions she really is okay with what they did. Kristi tells her that she isn’t okay with any of it, but Acosta is a cop and what she’s doing is going to get someone hurt. Acosta says that what she’s doing is getting out.

Randall tells Julie to slow down, asking what she is planning, and she tells him Ethan calls it storywalking. He tells her to take a breath, but she asks what she is supposed to do after that. If she did it before and went somewhere, she can do it again, and if there is any chance she can help her father, she has to try. He just says to tell him what she needs him to do.

Tabitha goes into church and sits with Jim’s body, asking why he didn’t come home and says that she is angry. All night she thought about what she wished she’d said to him in the woods. There’s been so much fighting and pain, but he was still her person. She is so afraid he didn’t know that. She questions how she is supposed to do it without him there, but then says that they are going to be okay. She doesn’t know how, but she is going to find a way to take care of their kids and keep them safe; he doesn’t have to be afraid. She tells him goodbye.

They are in the road yelling again for Acosta to stop, and Boyd has to jump out of the way to not get hit. Kristi says that she’s going too fast, and they’ve been through town twice. Acosta says that there has to be a way; she’s not going to just wait for them to pick them off. The people of the town hang their rocks, pretend they’re safe, and think Boyd will save them. Acosta says that Boyd doesn’t know what he's doing; none of them do. Kristi questions she does, and she says that at least she is trying.

Boyd says Acosta is looking for a way out and won’t stop, so for Kenny to go get the strip.

Henry (Robert Joy) comes looking Victor (Scott McCord) and tells his son he is sorry about Jim and asks if he’ gone see to Ethan. Victor tells him he can’t, getting more upset. Henry says Ethan is his friend and needs him. Victor says that the words on the wall, it takes everything good away and questions what if it takes him next. Henry tells him he’s not going anywhere. Victor says he doesn’t know that and that he shouldn't have come to this place. Henry says no one should have come to this place, but the two of them are there together, and he will take it no matter what gets written on walls. They will face this together. Henry hugs him.

Randall questions they just walk inside and asks what will happen. She says then she will find her dad. She tells him to walk inside first. He walks in and nothing happens. He asks her what was supposed to happen, and she tells him nothing, she just had to make sure the same thing wouldn’t happen to him when he came in to get her. She says she needs him to give her some time before he pulls her out, even if it looks bad. She makes him promise and he agrees.

Julie walks, and suddenly it’s night. She hears the monsters screaming and sees them in the woods. She then sees the RV (from episode 209) and her father looking out. She yells for him. Donna comes out followed by Jim and Boyd, who shoots into the woods, almost hitting Julie. She watches them leave and tries to follow, but the diner woman suddenly grabs her by the hair and pushes her down, climbing on top of her and says, “I want to play.” In the present, Julie is seizing. In the past, she yells for Randall to pull her out, and the woman says there is no one to help her and turns into a monster, grabbing Julie’s face. Randall drags her from the ruins and she wakes up, telling him she saw her father and has to go back. He stops her and hugs her as she cries.

Tabitha knocks on the bedroom door, but Ethan’s gone. Donna tells Tabitha that she was there the whole time and that he was upstairs. Tabitha calls for him.

Boyd and Kenny lay down the strip. Kenny tells Marielle that Kristi will be ok.

Acosta says her mother always believed in hell, but she thinks hell is for people who think they deserve to suffer. She is a good person and doesn’t deserve to be there. Kristi tells her none of them do, but Acosta says she doesn’t know that or know them. She says that maybe they don’t try harder, because deep down they think they deserve to be there. Kristi says the real reason that they don’t try harder is because every time they do, someone dies. She asks Acosta if she knows how many people thought they knew exactly what the place is, how many theories she’s heard on why they are there or how to get out, and what they all have in common is they’re all dead. There is no way out. Acosta won’t believe it and says there is always a way.

Ethan meanwhile is walking along the road. He runs off the road and hides. Kristi tells her to pull over. Acosta just says he’s fine, but Kristi points out he's a kid in the woods whose father just died and tells her to pull over. She ignores her. Acosta sees the strip on the road and tries to avoid it, but Kristi grabs the wheel and turns back so they hit it.

Boyd screams at Acosta to get out and shoves her against the ambulance, saying that she could have killed somebody. He cuffs her and yells at her for driving like a crazy person. Kristi tells him about Ethan walking on the road.

Ethan is in the woods. He goes into the RV and puts the radio in his backpack. He comes back out, and his father is sitting there on the log. He runs to him and hugs him. Jim asks what he’s doing there. Ethan tells him he came to get the radio. His father says it’s broken. Ethan tells him he thought maybe could send the real Thomas a message, that he should look for him so he wouldn’t be alone. Jim looks around suddenly, and Ethan asks what's wrong. His father tells him everything is okay and asks if he remembers what he told him the last time they were here at the RV, and Ethan says when bad things happen, they have to look after each other and always do their best. He tells him his mother and sister need that from him now more than ever. Ethan questions he’s not staying. Jim says that he wishes he could. Then he looks around like someone is coming. Ethan asks what's happening. He tells him he needs him to do something very important. He says the night they arrived there and crashed the RV and were trapped inside, he had a dream. He asks Ethan if he remembers it. Ethan says it was about the Lake of Tears. Jim tells him it’s there, and he needs Ethan to find it. He asks his father why they can’t find it together. Ethan hears them calling for him and turns towards their voices, but when he turns back again, his father is gone.

Tabitha runs through the woods yelling at him to come back. She finds him and says she was worried. He tells her he saw his father. She hugs him.
