The series Spider-Noir, which recently premiered on Prime Video in both true-hue color and authentic black-and-white, takes place in 1930s New York and tells the story of an aging and down on his luck Detective Ben Reilly (Nicholas Cage) who is pushed to deal with his old life and the hero he used to be.

Recently, production designer Warren Alan Young spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the ambitious Marvel series, including how he approached it as both a period piece and a noir, and what it took to build a 1933 New York entirely in California. Young also discusses the challenges of supporting both color and black-and-white versions of the series, the research that shaped its world, creating some of the pivotal sets and details, how practical effects and design choices such as the black web helped define the final look, and more.
