3.09 - "Revelations, Part One"

Tensions are at an all-time high as the town residents learn that one of their own has gone missing.

***The following is review/breakdown followed by a detailed recap of episode 308 of FROM, “Thresholds,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

Episode 3.08, “Thresholds,” is in my opinion, one of the best of the season so far, on par with the premiere episode. We get major developments heading into the last two episodes of season three.

The main thread of the story is what Ellis and Boyd should do with Fatima. Boyd wants to cover it up, which I think is a mistake. I appreciate that Boyd wants to protect his family, but he’s not thinking about the safety of the town, which includes his son, nor the ramifications of what could happen. Donna is 100% right. It’s one thing to live in the town and hide from the creatures, but people won’t be okay with an unknown murderer among them. It would ultimately be a witch hunt for Sara, who in this case is innocent. However, even if somehow he could convince the people that Sara is innocent, which isn’t likely, people would be scared because they wouldn't know who to trust. It would breed fear, and people would start defending themselves and eventually going on the offense, feeling threatened. They could end up hurting or killing each other, because they can't trust each other. I think the best way forward would have either been to find a way to convince people it was an accident, or perhaps make it look like Tilly tried to leave at night, and they would assume she was killed. The other solution, which no one wants to see, would be to make it look like the creatures killed her, but I would worry they might retaliate. In the end, some version of the truth was probably, in my opinion, the best option. I also do not believe that Acosta will just let it go, unless they somehow brought her in on what was going on. Regardless, I do think Boyd should have listened more to what Donna said. Boyd is becoming less of a good leader, whereas Donna would make a better one, because she thinks of the town first.

From Riot Games, Arcane, which has become one of Netflix's most successful animated series, was created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee and is based on the League of Legends game.

In season one, during a civil war between the affluent Piltover and impoverished Zaun, orphans Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and her little sister Powder (Mia Sinclair Jenner) become thieves of the Undercity. When they try to pull off a heist with their friends topside in Piltover, things don’t go to plan, and events lead to a tragic end for their adoptive family, resulting in Powder changing her name and becoming the “jinx” her sister says she is. While Vi is imprisoned, Jinx (Ella Parnell) is taken in by crime lord Silco (Jason Spisak), who embraces her technological skills and fractured psyche, resulting in her attacking the Piltover Council.

Season two picks up with the fates of the Council members uncertain and with Vi unsure if there is any of her sister left in Jinx as the conflict between Piltover and Zaun escalates.

Based on the best-selling Inspector Rebus novels by Sir Ian Rankin, the new adaptation premiering today on Viaplay is set in modern day Edinburgh and reimagines John Rebus (Richard Rankin) as a younger Detective Sergeant. The series explores his struggles with modern technology, personal relationships, and a violent criminal conflict involving his brother, Michael, when he steals from drug dealers to support his family. Rebus must decide whether to protect his brother or bring him to justice. A fresh new take in the high-end crime drama, Rebus examines complex issues of family dynamics, ethical dilemmas, and the shifting landscape of law enforcement. Recently having aired on the BBC, the series will now be available to binge in the US starting today.

Rankin, who fans may know as Roger Wakefield on the hit series Outlander, which premieres later this month, recently spoke with SciFi Vision about working on Rebus and playing such an iconic character.

This week’s episode, “These Fragile Lives,” once again has some scenes that are more about character development and moving the story forward as opposed to the actual mystery, but three of the main storylines of the episode are integral to the puzzle that is the show.

The first storyline which is a big part of the mystery is of course with Fatima, and it does weave into some of the others stories in the episode.

The episode picks back up with Fatima at the clinic, and it’s clear that she is the only one that actually believes she’s pregnant. They all are thinking it’s in her head, no matter what they pretend otherwise.

In the next scene, when Kristi and Boyd argue over the pregnancy, I can see both points of view. Kristi can’t help Fatima if she doesn’t know what is going on, but at the same time, Boyd is right, it wasn’t his place to tell her; it was up to Fatima and Ellis. Boyd though, as per usual lately is getting way too angry. How can he expect her to know what to do if he doesn’t himself? She may have medical training, but nothing is normal where they are.

Fatima is quick to anger when Marielle tries to help her, though I do understand why, because she doesn’t think anyone believes her, and to be fair, they don’t. I do think though that there might be something to Marielle’s words, that fear can only break you if you let it. Out of the three, Marielle, Julie, and Randall, she seems to be the only one who isn’t being affected all the time by what happened. The show has hinted in the past that perhaps fears become real or what is spoken could potentially come true (such as Kenny talking about losing two parents, etc). The question is, is she really not affected, or is she just much better at hiding it than the others?

The original Wizards of Waverly Place first premiered in 2007 and ended its run in 2012. The all-new series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, follows an adult Justin Russo (David Henrie, who also executive produces), who has embraced a normal life with his wife, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), and their children, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). However, when his sister Alex (Selena Gomez) brings Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a young wizard seeking guidance, into his home, he must rediscover his magical talents to mentor her, all while managing his family duties and ensuring the safety of the Wizard World and the future of magic.

It was both “insanely difficult” and “ultimately easy” for star Henrie to step back into the shoes of Justin after so many years. “The pressure was certainly there, because there’s a lot of expectation,” the actor told SciFi Vision during a recent press conference. “…There [are] a lot of people with a lot of opinions and a lot of anticipation, so that pressure was certainly weighing down on me, but the actual doing of it was really easy. It wasn’t like, you know, a sport you hadn’t played in thirteen years, and it’s really hard to pick back up. It was just there.”

Tonight, an all-new episode of The Irrational airs on NBC. The series follows Jesse L. Martin as Alec Mercer, a renowned behavioral science professor. He brings his exceptional insights on a variety of challenging cases, partnering with clients that range from the FBI to everyday people seeking help with their situations. With the help of his dedicated team and innovative social-science experiments, Mercer works to solve high-stakes crimes, reveal underlying truths, and answer irrational questions.

In tonight’s episode, “Formal Ties,” when Alec and Marisa (Maahra Hill) attend a wedding at the foreign embassy of a daughter of a mutual friend, it quickly becomes a murder investigation when the father of the bride is killed. Meanwhile, Phoebe (Molly Kunz) continues to deal what to do about her professor, who she discovered is plagiarizing a student’s work.

In High Potential, an exceptionally brilliant single mother Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olsen), who has a knack for crime solving, teams up with a by-the-book detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), creating a dynamic duo that tackles crime in unconventional ways. Created by Drew Goddard, High Potential is adapted from the French series Haut Potentiel Intellectual (HPI).

In tonight's episode, a chaotic office party at a leading medical technology startup results in the unexpected murder of the founder and CEO. Meanwhile, Morgan develops an interest in a new colleague at the precinct.  

Amirah J plays the role of Ava, Olsen’s daughter on the series. The actress recently spoke with SciFi Vision about working on the series with Olsen, as well as teased what’s to come in the new episode, which airs tonight, and much more.

The episode had a few really important scenes when it came to the mystery, but most of the episode was more just about moving the story forward.

The episode opens with Tabitha and Jim arguing. This scene really highlights that Jim is doing a very bad job parenting. He acts like it was so difficult for him to take care of the kids when she was only gone a few days, which she points out, but even in those few days, Jim did not take care of his kids. He ran off, more than once, even if it was to go after Tabitha. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t feel that Tabitha should have left originally either, but the kids weren’t alone when she left. Jim repeatedly left Julie to take care of Ethan alone, and in fact Ethan almost died in the first episode when he ran out at night when they were once again, alone. I did enjoy, however, Tabitha yelling at him for it, even if she hasn’t been the world’s best mother either. It sounds like from what Julie said before that neither of them were really around after Thomas died. We do in the scene get a bit more insight though into how Tabitha is still affected by the town meeting from the episode before. I did also enjoy when they are screaming, and you hear the creature scream from outside. Julie thankfully was just over it and is letting her mother know that they are affected by their arguments, and this time probably everyone heard them. Even Ethan is aware they are having issues.

There is a very interesting conversation with Jade and Boyd at the bar while he’s talking about the numbers from the bottle tree. It’s always great when characters share information, and I love seeing Jade trying to piece it together, because I always feel like he represents the fans trying to figure out the series. Jade says that it is possible that the place Tabitha went to in Maine occupies the same space as the lighthouse and that it’s not so much as a wormhole but a dimensional rift. This theory actually could hold some weight, especially because there are two bottle trees in the real world like there are in the town, which makes me think they are in the same place as well. If you think about what happened to Dale, it’s the same thing: two objects in the same space, but he got stuck on the way. I am also very curious if the one bottle tree in Maine, the one Tabitha and Henry never made it to, could have possibly been a faraway tree in the real world, but at this point we may never know.
