Following the review/breakdown is a detailed recap.

After a three year wait, Severance is finally back for season two with some answers but even more questions. When we last left our team, Dylan had activated the Overtime Contingency Protocol, transporting the innies of Helly, Mark, and Irving into their outies’ bodies, where they each made their own revelations: Helly discovered her outie is Helena Eagan, part of the family who runs Lumon, while Irving found his outie’s paintings of what is likely the testing floor, as well as that the outie of the man he loves, Burt, is in a relationship. Meanwhile, perhaps the biggest reveal for the innies was when Mark discovered that his grieving outie’s wife, Gemma, who everyone thought was dead, is actually Ms. Casey.

Viewers are quickly sucked back into the drama and intrigue right from the opening of the episode with the camera whipping around Mark as he runs through the corridors. It presents a sense of urgency and confusion pulling viewers right back even after such a long absence.

The acting across the board is unsurprisingly fantastic, honestly making it hard to choose a favorite amongst the four main characters. Even the supporting characters are an enjoyment to watch, especially Milchick, who is always hilarious.

The script is excellent all around. The writers did a fantastic job of quickly catching us back up on what we missed and how the innies using the OTC protocol led to the Macrodat Uprising.

As for the mystery itself, I was happy to see that the episode still kept it at the forefront, leaving pieces of the puzzle to dissect, yet still gave us enough on each of the four main characters in the episode to get a picture of where the season is heading, as well as keep us invested in each of their lives.

When we pick up with Mark’s innie, to him, no time has passed, but he’s been told by Milchick it’s been five months on the outside. And things have changed a lot at Lumon. For one, the Wellness Center has been removed, but so have his friends. In Macrodata Refinement he finds faces he doesn’t recognize, along with the addition of a new teenager working above him.

When Milchick tells Mark, that not only has the MDR team become famous, but that everyone except Mark’s outie refused to return to Lumon, it’s hard to take most of what he says at face value. It seems unlikely that none of the other outies wanted to return to Lumon, most notably Helly, especially given what we now know about her. The innies may not know anything about the outside world, but as viewers it was obvious from the get go at the very least the newspaper was a lie, considering that the photo of the four of them was very clearly Photoshopped together.

It was great to see Mark’s innie not buy it either, and the length he went to to get his friends back was hilarious and culminated in my favorite scene and the most comedic of the episode: Mark being caught having written the fake letter calling Milchick a shambolic rube.

It’s hard to say whether the severance reform is completely legit or not, but I appreciated the video about the Macrodat Uprising all the same. Not only was it funny (and you can’t go wrong with a voiceover by Keanu Reeves) but it was filled with clues to the truth about Lumon and other little Easter eggs, as was the rest of the break room for that matter, with the interesting posters on the walls.

I also loved Dylan’s reaction of “What the shit?!” To seeing Mark and Helly’s doppelgängers kiss, as well as their embarrassed response.

The biggest thing to me that sticks out of the episode though is Helly’s lies when her friends ask her what she saw on the outside. While it’s true that Helly would not necessarily want to reveal to the others that she is part of the family that is responsible for their suffering, to me, it makes much more sense that Lumon sent in Helena, her outie, as a spy. There isn’t concrete proof yet, but she did act a bit awkward when she first saw Mark, and it wasn’t clear like the others that she was being “woken up” immediately after the OTC protocol was turned off. What may be the biggest clue of all though, is the video did say “Lumon is Listening.” It would be a perfect plan for them to find out the truth of how much the revealed about their lives at Lumon while on the outside.

Another terrific scene was Dylan trying to convince Irving to return. It really shows how close the team has gotten and that Dylan has changed (his comment on the other MDR team deserving to die not withstanding). Irv is taken aback, and it makes for a touching moment between the two.

Speaking of Dylan, I believe that the Outie Visitation Suite shown to him by Milchick is just another way to keep him in check, a new bribe since the other perks aren’t working. Whether any of what he tells Dylan though is legit has yet to be seen.

At the end, everyone is back together again, which is as it should be. While briefly meeting a new MDR team was fun, the four of them together is when the show is at its best. They have really grown together as a family. I do really question though why they gave Mark what he asked for, and is it just all an illusion control that he doesn’t really possess, or is he and/or Gemma so important to them they are going to great lengths to keep him there?

However, perhaps the biggest shock of the episode, is within the last 30 seconds. Mark is working on the “Cold Harbor” file when the numbers that he is separating based on the four tempers change into the face of Gemma/Ms. Casey. The reflection in Mark’s eyes shows that he still sees the numbers. What it actually means though, has yet to be determined.

From the beginning of the episode until the last minute, I was entertained. Fans are in for a real treat for the rest of the season, and I can’t wait to be along for the ride to rewatch it again right along with them.

***RECAP***

Mark S.’s innie arrives in the elevator looking very confused. He runs down the corridors, passing an empty purple room, similar to the green room of the MDR. He continues and eventually stops and stares at another door. Next to it, the word “Wellness” can barely be made out like it was painted over. He looks around inside the room as a figure watches him from the hall but steps back out of frame.

Mark returns to the hall and walks to his office in Macrodata Refinement. Inside are faces he doesn’t recognize: a woman, Gwendolyn Y, a man with a mustache, Dario R, and an older man who introduces himself as Mark W.

Milchick enters carrying a bunch of blue balloons with Mark’s face on them and welcomes him back.

Mark follows Milchick down the hall, asking about his teammates, but he doesn’t tell him much of anything, other than that five months ago was one of the most painful moments in the history of the company. Mark is surprised by how long it’s been.

Milchick introduces Mark to a young girl working in the office named Ms. Huang.

In Milchick’s new office, he tells Mark that Ms. Cobel is no longer with the company and that he now manages the severed floor. He says that the others were not fired. Helly R and Irving B both successfully made contact with people on the outside as he did. Dylan G’s outie learned what happened after the fact. The four of them have achieved international fame and have become known as the face of severance reform. He gives mark a newspaper that is partially redacted. The article title is “Innies” Blow the Whistle. He says that for the past 5 months they have been asking how a sadist like Harmony Cobel could take root in Lumon soil and what it says about them. They also know she was at his sister’s home when he awoke there. He tells Mark he believes she developed an erotic fixation with him and had plans to pursue both he and his outie in a throuple, but thankfully failed. Milchick finally says that they tried for weeks to get the team back, even telling them about the reforms, but none of them agreed except for his outie, who insisted on returning, begged to let him back right away. Mark doesn’t look convinced and wants to hear it directly from them. Milchick tells him it’s not possible and to enjoy his balloons.

Back in the office, Mark W thinks it’s cramped, but likes the colors better because the old office was puce, which Gwendolyn argues was purple. Dario asks about pencils and Mark shows him the supply closet as Gwendolyn asks Mark about what he saw in the outside world.

Ms. Huang comes in and brings them to the kitchenette to play the ball game where they each tell who a fact about themselves while they hold the red ball. Ms. Huang says that it’s her first day as deputy manager and that she was a crossing guard before this. Mark W. says he’s from the MDR department of Branch 5X where he worked with Gwendolyn Y. Mark says that he’s been working there about two years and is lucky to have made four new friends. Ms. Huang reminds him that she’s his supervisor not his friend. He stares at her and says “three new friends.”

Mark leaves in the elevator, but for him it’s like no time has passed when he comes back.

Gwendolyn asks Mark about his perpetuity wing. She worked in a newer branch where the Eagans were animatronic and did a choreographed dance. Dario says that the Eagans were brooms in his wing, each head made from a plate, because they were poor. They had a rope instead of an elevator. Mark sneaks and writes a note beneath his desk on a piece of blue paper. When Mark leaves, he slips the paper into the pocket of the other jacket on the rack.

Mark comes back into the office, and Milchick reads the note out loud, clearly knowing Mark wrote it. It is supposed to be from Mark W and is telling his outie of the “heinous conditions” of the office and it calls Milchick a “shambolic rube” who goes by Milkshake, a man who’s stupidity is rivaled only by that of the 9 core principals. Mark tells Milchick that he wants his team back. Milchick revokes Mark’s card and status of department chief and says he’s transferring it to Mark W. Mark just smiles and says Milchick doesn’t know yet what he did to the kitchenette.

While they all run to see what he’s done, Mark takes off down the hall and runs into Milchick’s office and takes out the speaker. Ms. Huang radios Milchick. Mark tries to contact the board and says that if they really want to do the right thing for severed people, he wants to see his team again. If they really are the face of severance reform, they deserve a chance, and they can’t just make them disappear. Milchick comes in and pulls the speaker plug. He tells Mark that the board doesn’t converse with innies, and his outie’s fame has gone to his innie’s head. Mark says that his innie just wants his coworkers back so they can serve Kier together. He follows Milchick to the elevator and asks if he’s firing him. He just ignores Mark and sends him in.

Mark’s innie wakes up. In the waiting room outside the elevator there is now a painting on the wall with the heads of the four of them with Kier kneeling over them with a sword, titled “Kier Pardons His Betrayers.”

Dylan comes out of the elevator saying that he didn’t think he’d be back. He asks Mark if “it” worked, meaning the OTC, which he tells him it did. Dylan asks about the others, but Mark doesn’t know where they are. He tells him how he’s been back with a new team and that Cobel is gone, and Milchick now is in charge.

They hear Irving in the elevator yelling for Burt. He walks in but doesn’t say anything. Mark waits for Helly to come out, and she does. He runs to her and hugs her. He says he was worried about her.

They go to the office. Irving is moaning from behind the door and says he needs a moment.

Dylan questions they aren’t in trouble. Mark doesn’t think so; their message got out and they are famous. Mark says he thinks Milchick tried to fire him, but he thinks it’s because he sort of sabotaged the new people.

Dylan asks what happened “out there.” Mark questions they could be waiting for them to tell each other what happened, because they don’t know what happened and are listening. Helly asks what happened to the security camera, noticing it’s missing. Irving comes out and apologizes. Miss Huang comes in and says Milchick is waiting for them in the break room.

Helly questions Mark about them being replaced. Dylan asks about his double, but Mark says they weren’t specific counterparts. Dylan says he shouldn’t feel bad for ending their lives, but Mark wasn’t trying to. Dylan just says he shouldn’t feel bad, because he’s sure they deserved it.

Miss Huang uses a black card to open the break room, but it’s not what they’ve seen before. Inside is a smiling Milchick. There are signs on the walls: “I’m a Frolic-aholic,” “Bee Ever Merry!” And “Grin & Baird It!” There is what looks like a projector with red, green, and blue lights. Milchick tells them that what they are about to see will be shown to every innie that steps foot in the building from now on and that he hopes it gives them a sense of Lumon’s feelings.

The video says on the screen “Lumon is Listening” and shows the building with a face drawn on. It says it’s the Lumon administration building, branch 501 and that it changed since its siring of 1870. In the basement floor is one of the premiere severed workspaces in the 206 countries Lumon operates. What makes a building truly happy? The question came to light when four MDR workers were dissatisfied with their severed lives and conspired to mount what Lumon historians will call the Macrodat Uprising. Various scenes are shown during the voice over with puppets: Irving yelling to burn the place to the ground, Mark asking why they are still working in the dark, and Mark & Helly kissing. The voice says that the Microdat Uprising yielded bounteous reforms including tasty new snacks as well as incentives also being reformed, from hall passes to pineapple bobbing to their brand new playful mirror room. At the end it thanks Kier for them and the Macrodat Uprising.

Milchick says that he knows they have their differences, but he respects them and doesn’t want to be their jailer. By end of day each of them choose if they want to remain there, not their outies. If they start to work on a file, he will assume they want to stay. If not, they will be sent to the surface. He says like the rest of the severed floor, the break room has no cameras or microphones. Privacy shouldn’t mean packing into supply closet. He adds that he hopes they will stay.

Dylan asks what they saw “up there” but to whisper, because he doesn’t believe Milchick. Mark tells them about the party for, Ricken, his brother-in-law, and how both he and his outie know Cobel for some reason. He adds that just before he switched back, he found a wedding photo of his outie’s wife who died, and the woman in the photo was miss Casey. Mark tells them he went to Wellness, but it’s completely gone.

They ask what Helly saw, but lying, she says she just saw the inside of a really boring apartment. She was watching some nature show on tv. She went outside and found a guy who looked like a gardener and told him everything. He thought it was BS but said his brother was a cop, and he would tell him everything. Irving questions there was a gardener at night. She just says that maybe he had a different job during the day. Irving asks if they suppose Milchick is serious about letting them leave. When asked what he saw, he just says it’s not their world up there. Helly tells him that its okay to tell them,  even if its bad. He doesn’t answer and leaves, telling them he just wants to walk for a bit. Dylan tells them he he will go talk to Irving and for them to go back; he’ll get them if he needs them.

In the hall, Helly asks Mark if they looked happy in the wedding photo. He tells her that he and Ms. Casey never felt that way, but does say he needs to get her out if she’s his outie’s wife. Helly tells him that she’s technically not his wife, but Mark says they are the “same-ish” people. Helly tells him they’re not the same as the outies, and speaking for herself she doesn’t think they owe them. However, Ms. Casey is one of them, so she will help him find out what happened if that’s what he wants and confirms she staying.

Irving tells Dylan to leave him alone; he failed at the objective. Instead, he went to find Burt and found out he’s with someone when he saw them through the window. He says he should be happy because Burt is happy, but the last time he was happy was when all he knew was MDR. Dylan still tries to stop him from going and tells him not to call it “leaving.” Irving reveals that before he went to Burt’s he saw the paintings of the black hallway and the elevator with the down arrow. It was different than the one to the break room. He doesn’t know why he painted it, but he wanted him to know. Dylan tells him that it wasn’t Burt’s outie but innie he fell for, but Irving just wants the pain to be over. Dylan says that Burt wouldn’t want him to leave, and he doesn’t either, because he’d be less productive. Irving says he’s Dylan’s favorite perk. He tells him if Burt was there he’d tell him to stay. Huang interrupts them saying Milchick wants to see Dylan.

Milchick’s computer screen says “Hello Ms Cobel.” Annoyed, he’s on the phone telling someone it should be changed by now to his name. Huang comes in with Dylan, who wants an apology for the belt he destroyed, but Milchick just tells him that his outie’s wife’s name is Gretchen; she wanted him to know. He says to come with him.

They go down a hall into a storage room. Milchick apologizes, but for not being a better listener and hearing their needs. He then shows Dylan the blueprints of a new renovation that he didn’t inform his colleagues about, the Outie Family Visitation Suite. Dylan asks if he’s saying he could see his family, and Milchick says he would say yes, if he takes the name of the room at face value. He says that everyone else in the department is single, so he wants him to keep it between them to avoid resentment. He’d hate for his friends to turn against him after all he’s done for them.

Huang is on her computer separating little circles, kind of like they separate numbers.

Milchick keeps watching the welcome screen. Meanwhile, Huang plays her Kier ring toss game.

Dylan comes in the office and they ask if he is all right and where Irving is. He’s about to tell them when Irving steps in and tells them he’s okay. They get back to work, “God Walked Down” playing. Dylan takes the wooden face of Dario and throws it in the drawer. Mark works on the numbers, smiling. His friends are back. Cold Harbor is 68% complete. The numbers on the screen change to Gemma’s face as the camera pans back showing the reflection of only numbers in his eyes.
