The Confession star, Italia Ricci joined SciFi Vision for an exclusive interview about her role as Naomi in the supernatural horror thriller film released in January.

Italia plays a widowed mother of one son, Dylan, who moves back to her deceased father’s home in Texas after experiencing fame in California. Her son, Dylan, played by Zachary Golinger shares that he is experiencing weird happenings in the house.  Naomi explores what could be behind the events happening in the house.

Children in supernatural and horror films seem to bring the creep factor. Ricci agrees and says that having children in these types of movies, especially now that she is a mother, she doesn't want anything that makes your skin crawl. Even in real life having an unusual experience when her and her husband were watching tv and on the baby monitor saw their son was sitting up in his bed in the middle of the night. He appeared to be still sleeping, and he started swaying for a minute, and they joked whether they should call an exorcist. She also says it goes for animals, as well. She does not like when things that shouldn’t exist in reality and are doing things that naturally they would not do in whatever story it is.

She also is creeped out over the randomness of crimes. Her favorite scary movie is The Strangers, because they terrorize and murder a couple in a cabin for no good reason, and it stays with her, because it doesn’t make any sense and can’t be prevented or controlled. Anything beyond control is terrifying to her.



While the film has the supernatural, Ricci shares her personal experience with the supernatural. Ricci feels that she has not had any supernatural experiences, because she thinks that the supernatural beings that exist can sense her desperation to have an experience, so they avoid her. She lived in a house in Los Angeles that she described as haunted by twins and additionally a medium had mentioned something about that. Ricci, along with her husband, would hear a sound which seemed like a ball rolling across the hallway of their upstairs, and her dog would notice, but no one was upstairs. Items would fall, but she would still come up with justifications over each event even if they were unrealistic. She’s never truly had a paranormal experience, but she wants to badly. She has shot things at old castles and places reported to be haunted and gone on days that she wasn’t shooting and asked the locations manager to let her into spaces that were not accessible to the public so that maybe she could see something, but she has had no luck.

An important part of The Confession’s story line has to do with water. Ricci loved shooting the water scenes since she was a synchronized swimmer and a lifeguard. She always loves being in the water. Some of the challenge came with the water scenes in the lake. Ricci didn’t like those as much, just because the temperature had dropped significantly by the time they were shooting; the lake temperature was 52 degrees. Ricci made it through those lake scenes with her adrenaline going, and it didn’t really phase her much. The other underwater scenes were done in a pool with an adequate temperature. Ricci admitted that these scenes were a lot more fun, and when they said they were done, she wanted to do more. She shares that there is a behind the scenes picture where she’s treading water in the deep end eating a slice of pizza.

The Confession incorporates a version of the Pied Piper legend into the film. Ricci grew up on a farm and there were spooky farm corners. In high school, she would tag along with her cousin’s friends and find old abandoned houses and go into them at night with flashlights. During her university time in Ontario, Canada, it was near an old, abandoned asylum, and people would go in there and trespass. Growing up being Roman Catholic, there wasn’t a lot of supernatural lore in her family circles.

The Confession ends with a twist. Ricci did not predict the ending. She was floored when she read the ending. She texted the director, Will Canon, that he was a “pretty effed up dude,” and she loved it, because it was very unexpected, terrifying, and heartbreaking. She was excited about the ending but also sad as far as the context of the story.

Will Italia Ricci’s character Naomi return? Ricci says crazier things have happened and never say never. She would be thrilled to bring the return of the character to the story.
