With Season 2 of Ted currently airing, fans are seeing a bolder, funnier version of the Bennett family. For Scott Grimes, who plays the gruff but lovable Matty Bennett, the experience of returning to this world was about more than just the jokes.

If Season 1 established the foundation, Season 2 is where Seth MacFarlane truly let loose. According to Grimes, while the core of the show remains grounded in the comfort of 70s and 80s sitcom tropes - complete with the same furniture, clothes, and character dynamics - the humor has evolved. “The comedy has been upped," Grimes noted. "We did what Seth wanted us to do in Season 1, but we kept it the same...Seth wrote more of what he wanted to write in Season 2."

This "more is more" approach seems to be paying off; Grimes shared that the series is performing even better than the first season since its release in early March.

At 54 years old, Grimes is a veteran of the industry, but filming on the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles still moves him to tears. Having started his career in LA at the age of 11, walking onto a historic studio lot remains a sacred experience for him.

"There was not a day being on the Universal Lot being grateful working on Ted," Grimes shared. He described the feeling of swiping his pass as a profound privilege. While the production provided golf carts to bridge the 1.5-mile gap between the trailers and the Bennett house, Grimes often requested a 15-minute heads-up so he could walk. His daily commute took him past Steven Spielberg’s office, historic soundstages, and the very street where The Munsters and The Burbs were filmed. Grimes savored every moment until the end, noting once filming stopped and his pass no longer worked it was sad losing access to the magic through the studio gates.

When the conversation shifted, Grimes was asked what inanimate object he would be if he were a sentient. Eschewing the idea of being a fluffy bear like Ted, he chose a Tonka truck, inspired by the joy he felt as a child and equated it to being like the Matchbox truck, "Dennis," featured in Season 1.

As for what fans can expect from Matty Bennett this season? Grimes revealed he didn't hold back - literally. "I show my butt this season," he laughed. Claiming his character is too unkempt to justify a workout routine, Grimes said he was "proud" to share his "freckled body" with the audience. When asked if this was a precursor to an OnlyFans account, he joked, "Yeah.”

The question remains: Will the Bennett family return? While Seth MacFarlane has previously said there would be no Season 3, Grimes suggests the door isn't entirely closed.

Grimes views Seth as the "conductor and master" of the series and respects his vision, but he notes that if the studio is willing to put up the necessary funds, the cast is ready.

"I would easily come back for more and do the character for the rest of my life," Grimes concluded. "I had a blast working with these people."
