"Fairly Legal" Creator Michael Sardo Talks About USA Network's New Series
Fairly Legal, USA Network's new original series, will be premiering next Thursday, following the return of Royal Pains. The new series stars Sarah Shahi (Life; The L Word) as Kate Reed, a top litigator, who frustrated by injustice, decides to become an "anti-lawyer," as a mediator. She does whatever to takes to resolve conflicts before the cases go to trial. The series also stars Michael Trucoo (Battlestar Galactica; Castle) as Justin Patrick, Virginia Williams (Revenge of the Bridesmaids; How I Met Your Mother) as Lauren Reed, and Baron Vaughn (The Other Guys; Law & Order) as Leonardo Prince.Michael Sardo, who has previously written for series such as The Tracey Ullman Show, Picket Fences, and Wings, and is the creator and executive producer of the show, sat down to talk to the digital media about the new series.
When coming up with the idea for the series, Sardo tends to approach his television pilots from a "feature writer's perspective in the sense of letting them find their own way." Part of his ideas came from having friends who were getting divorced. "All of them would start off very amicable, "You know we're just going to divide up the stuff; there's really no problem here." Then somehow or another in the process, once they got lawyers, it was war. Then I saw a couple friends go through divorces with a mediator, and they just talked it out and found a solution, little bumps along the road, but it was fine. I got interested in what was this thing, this mediation thing."
"Being Human" Holds its Own
Syfy has carried reimagined series before, take Battlestar Galactica for example. However, Syfy's newest series, Being Human, is different in that the original series is currently still on television in its third season on the BBC. Many people have been hesitant on whether or not to tune in to Syfy's version, especially fans of the original. After watching the first three episodes and talking to some of those involved in the show, however, I think everyone should give it a shot. Syfy's version can definitely hold its own.It's true that the general story line is the same - a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost become roommates, and because of the success of franchises like Twilight and True Blood, that may be enough to pull a certain demographic in. Some of the rules and myths of supernatural creatures are of course the same, but it is almost unavoidable that there would be an overlap with all of the other shows out there. However, this show is nothing like the other current popular shows with similar themes.
All three characters long for normality and consider themselved cursed. As you would expect, Aidan, the vampire (Sam Witwer; Battlestar Galactica, Smallville), tries (and at times fails) not to kill humans, as does Josh (Superman Returns, Fanboys), the werewolf played by Sam Huntington, who turns once a month. Meanwhile Sally, the ghost (Meaghan Rath; Prom Wars, 18 to Life) who haunts the friends' new apartment, learns what it means to be ethereal and struggles to live without being able to interact with others, or even to leave the apartment.
Having only seen a couple episodes of the original, I cannot say how similar certain storylines are, but from what I have seen, regardless, they are very enjoyable, even if some were familiar. The producers and actors of the show have stated in various interviews that even if certain situations are the same, they may be handled completely different on the new series. And it's great that Syfy also gets thirteen episodes compared to BBC's six to develop the story during the first season.
I found the stories compelling and the characters believable in their struggles. The scripts were well written and I was really surprised when each episode was over because it moved so quickly and was quite eager to start the next.
Season 2 of White Collar Returns Next Week
USA Network's hit original series, White Collar, returns with all new episodes from season two next week. The mid-season cliffhanger ended with Mozzie (Willie Garson, Sex and the City) having been shot, and now Neal Caffrey, played by Matt Bomer (Chuck; Tru Calling), and Peter Burke, played by Tim DeKay (Tell Me You Love Me; Carnivàle) work to find the shooter and continue to look for answers about Kate's murder.Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay sat down with the digital media to discuss the upcoming season of White Collar, which returns next Tuesday. The two actors have a great camaraderie on screen as well as off. This was very evident in the interview. DeKay joked that they "went to therapy once a week."
NBC's The Cape Premieres Tomorrow

NBC is pulling out all the stops for its new series, The Cape, a crime drama with a comic book sensibility. Curious viewers have seen the promos and explored the show's website, which includes an online graphic novel and official message board. The marketing blitz reached a high point just before Christmas, when the show's creator and executive producer, Thomas Wheeler, made time for a Q&A session with digital journalists.
The show stars David Lyons (ER) as Vince Faraday, a good cop framed for crimes he did not commit. Presumed dead in an explosion, Faraday teams up with a gang of carnival workers who help him assume the persona of The Cape - his son's favorite comic book hero. Taking the law into his own hands, Faraday fights to defeat the criminal forces of Palm City and win back his wife, Dana (Jennifer Ferrin, Life on Mars) and son, Trip (Ryan Wynott, Flash Forward).

Colin Morgan & Bradley James Return for a 3rd Season of "Merlin"
Syfy's popular series Merlin returns for a third season starting January 7 at 10PM ET/PT. Colin Morgan reprises his role as the young wizard Merlin, who must protect Prince Arthur, played by Bradley James. The new season finds the kingdom of Camelot in turmoil by the return of Morgana. This season also brings new guest stars, including Harry Melling, Warwick Davis, Miriam Margoyles, and Mark Williams from the Harry Potter movies. Guest stars from last season Emilia Fox and Santiago Cabrera also return.
Both Morgan and James sat down with the digital media to discuss the new season.
Brendan Fehr Stars in "Ice Quake"
Growing up in Canada, Brendan Fehr did not plan on being an actor. For some quick-cash he stopped by Look Talent Management for a modeling assignment when the manager suggested he try acting instead. The rest is history. Most people probably know Fehr for his work on Roswell as the character Michael Guerin, or perhaps from CSI: Miami or Bones. He however, has also appeared in other series, such as Millennium and Samurai Girl. He has worked in film as well, landing roles in Disturbing Behavior, Final Destination, and The Forsaken, to name a few.
Fehr now can be seen starring in the Syfy original movie, Ice Quake, premiering tonight on Syfy at 9PM ET/PT.
Ice Quake, which also stars Victor Garber (Alias, Glee), takes place on Christmas Eve, when the Alaskan permafrost thaws, creating underground rivers of liquid methane, causing earthquakes. A family is separated and must find each other and work together to stop an explosion that could wipe out the planet.
Brendan Fehr sat down with the digital media to discuss life and this upcoming role.
Colin Ferguson on Christmas in Eureka
Christmas is just around the corner and your favorite Syfy shows are back for the holidays with special standalone episodes. On December 7th, fans will get to see what the holidays are like in the town of Eureka in "Oh Little Town…" Global Dynamic employees celebrate at a holiday party, when as usual an experiment goes wrong. Carter’s plans are put on hold when he, Zoe, and the rest of the town are trapped in Eureka during a heat wave. Matt Frewer returns as Taggert and Chris Parnell guest stars. Colin Ferguson, who stars in Eureka, and also directed the Syfy original movie Triassic Attack that premiered last weekend on Syfy, sat down with the online media to discuss Christmas in Eureka and his other endeavors.
Review: The Walking Dead 1x03, "Tell it to the Frogs"

As The Walking Dead approached the halfway point of the season, the writers took a step back and gave us some character development and group dynamics. Episodes like this are needed to sustain the major themes through the rest of this season and into next. While it seemed as if not a lot happened, we had a huge advance in the Rick-Lori-Shane storyline. Add in some compelling action among the supporting cast and overall this was another excellent episode.
The Grimes family reunion was handled beautifully. I actually had a knot in my stomach waiting for Shane and Lori to see Rick. I can't remember the last time a TV show made me feel that much tension and anticipation, probably not since Lost. Sarah Wayne Callies was excellent in this scene, in just a few moments you could see the disorientation on Lori's face, then the recognition, and perhaps a split second of joy before her expression turned to horror. Andrew Lincoln's reactions as Rick saw his son were also moving. Nice work all around.

Syfy Original Movie: Ice Quake - Press Release & Video
In light of the holidays right around the corner, Syfy is continuing in the Christmas spirit with a new Saturday Original movie called Ice Quake, as a family is forced to fight for survival among cataclysmic disasters instead of simply fighting the thought of whether or not to have another plate of leftovers. While caught on a mountain that’s covered in white as far as the eye can see the surface begins to rumble and the land begins to open. An invisible field pops up out of the crack that causes a turn for the worst. Watch the clip and tune in on December 11th at 9/8c only on Syfy.
Eric Balfour Stars in "Skyline" Opening Tomorrow
"Don't look up." That's the tagline of the new science fiction thriller, Skyline, which opens tomorrow in theaters. The movie stars Eric Balfour as Jarrod, who recently sat down with Jamie Ruby of Sci Fi Vision and Media Blvd. for a private, exclusive interview.
Balfour is probably best known for his work on series such as Six Feet Under, 24, and more recently his role as Duke Crocker in Syfy's Haven. He however has also appeared on the silver screen, in films such as What Women Want, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Spirit.
Balfour's fans will be happy to know that he and the rest of the cast and crew will resume filming Haven in April with an airdate scheduled for the end of June. He and his costars are excited to get back to filming.
